Arts Impact Statement:
Why We Do What We Do
The arts not only look good, they do good!
When we consider why the arts are so vital to our community, instead of questioning what art is, we should ask ourselves: What does art do?
The arts uplift and empower people, and stronger individuals help build a better community.
Performing arts boost creativity and confidence. In turn, creativity and confidence foster problem-solving skills, innovation, and adaptability.
Experiencing the arts develops empathy, respect, and a broader outlook. It also reduces anxiety, stress, and loneliness.
The arts enable people from diverse backgrounds to share experiences. Shared experiences create connections and conversations. Conversations lead to healthier relationships and a stronger community.
The arts profoundly influence the human spirit. An example of this is the story of a young boy named Ronan. Stephen Mattin took his 9-year-old grandson, Ronan, to a classical concert in Boston in 2019. The grandfather was unsure if his grandson would enjoy or understand the concert, as the boy was non-verbal and autistic. The two sat quietly during the performance. After the last piece, the grandfather was ready to leave quickly, but before he could stand up, the boy exclaimed, “Wow!” Musicians and audience members shared in the sentiment that the music and performance had been extraordinary. Only his grandfather knew how deep the music's impact truly was on the boy. This is what art does.
